Get Out of the Gutter

If we anthropomorphized every Saint Louis Zoo dweller, it wouldn't be hard to match creature to sport. The giraffes would be stunners on the basketball court (of course), the wallabies and 'roos would play soccer (erm, we mean football), the fancy foxes would swing the clubs, and the rhinos would most certainly be on a bowling team (even though they have weak eyesight — who needs to see to bowl, anyway?). That must be why, then, that the St. Louis chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers hosts a bowling fundraiser to help rhinoceros conservation around the world. At Bowling for Rhinos, held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Tropicana Lanes (7960 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights; 314-781-0282), participants get to bowl two games on six-person teams and hang out with other folks who are concerned about rhinoceroses. And if anyone throws a lot of gutter balls, we expect that they'll blame their eyes — after all, that's what a rhino would do. Participation costs $25 per person, but bring some extra cash for the silent auction and raffles; 100 percent of the proceeds benefits the cause. Learn more at www.stlzoo.org.
