Since 2006, artist Jamie Adams has been painting large-scale, black-and-white portraits of French New Wave film icon Jean Seberg. In his latest series, Niagara, Adams broadens his palette by moving to color, as well as expanding his cast of characters. Jean Seberg is still front and center, but in these new paintings, she is freed from her Paris apartment and joined by the likes of Marilyn Monroe, who, curiously enough, made the leap from supporting roles in black-and-white movies to top-billed Technicolor features in the 1953 film noir Niagara. Jamie Adams: Recent Work opens with a free reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Philip Slein Gallery (4735 McPherson Avenue; 314-361-2617 or www.philipsleingallery.com). The show remains up through Saturday, May 17, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
