Sister's Secret

Apr 21, 2011 at 4:00 am
Agnes is a young woman who has had an unexpected pregnancy; it happens. Problems arise because Agnes is a nun, and because the baby has been found dead in her room at the convent. All of this is made much worse because Agnes insists the child was immaculately conceived. Dr. Livingstone is the psychiatrist appointed by the court to determine if Sister Agnes is mentally fit to stand trial, and standing in her way is Mother Miriam Ruth, the head of Agnes' order and a woman who will do everything she can to protect Agnes from the law. John Pielmeier's Agnes of God questions the matter of faith, the rationality of science, the plausibility of miracles and the fallibility of the law — and many permutations thereof — and leaves you in suspense until the final moments. Avalon Theatre Company presents Agnes of God at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (April 28 through May 8) at Crestwood ArtSpace (Watson and Sappington roads, Crestwood; 314-351-6482 or www.avalontheatre.org). Tickets are $20 to $30.
