Sweet, Sweet Music and Dance

Seeing performers dance within the confines of an indoor stage can be quite impactful. Yet there's something very special about watching that same performance outside, under the sky, that makes it feel more spontaneous, uninhibited, fierce, cool. And when 60 dance companies have the chance to move, groove, tap, snap and twirl in the fresh outdoor air, you've really got something spectacular! To be a part of this kind of movement magic this weekend, look no further than Grand Center (around North Grand and Washington boulevards, specifically). There, the Dancing in the Street Festival takes over on Saturday, September 29, from 1 to 8 p.m., bringing all manner and styles of dance to three stages. We're talking about salsa, ballet, Bollywood, hip-hop and modern; a whole stage devoted to tap; and showcases featuring step teams (at 2:15 p.m.) and breakdancing (at 4:15 p.m.). Plus, beginning at 6:45 p.m., you can get your dance on as well, with a conga line and a performance by Nikko Smith (starting at 7 p.m.). Admission to the festival is free; check out a full schedule and learn more at www.grandcenter.org.
