What a Tradition

The 2014 St. Louis Jewish Book Festival brings more than 40 authors to town to talk books, and the opening act is a real showstopper: Theodore Bikel, star of stage and screen. The venerable actor discusses his life and career at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 2, at the Jewish Community Center (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; tickets are $40). It's likely Bikel will address his role as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, which marks its 50th anniversary this year. If you can't get enough inside information from the man himself, Barbara Isenberg discusses Tradition!, her book about the making of the historical musical, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, November 3, at the JCC (tickets are $15). Isenberg chronicles the story of Fiddler from its conception to its debut, as well as the film adaptation and the long tradition of the play as a regular feature in repertory around the world. The book festival continues Sunday, November 16; for the full schedule, visit www.stljewishbookfestival.org. Consider the festival-pass option, which gets you access to every author event for just $75.
