The Ten Best Shows In St. Louis This Weekend: September 14 to 16

Big Business - Friday @ the Firebird

Friday dominates the hell out of this week's picks, which has never happened before, in my tenure. I'm not sure what to make of that really; we are still running numbers and engaging in statistical analysis at the RFT Music laboratories, in an attempt to explain the anomaly.

Hooten Hollers big 45 release show is tonight at Off Broadway. I should clarify that I mean the show is big, not the 45. The 45 is normal-sized, just to clear up any confusion. Shock rappers Odd Future take the stage at the Pageant tonight; read my argument for why you should not skip this show here. More Friday picks abound; as for Saturday and Sunday, there's Burrowss at Lemmon's and Two Gallants at Plush, respectively. The rest of our picks follow.

Friday:

Buddy Guy @ Family Arena w/ Jonny Lang 7:00 p.m. | $31-$61 The dude who gave Jimi Hendrix his mojo still has plenty to spare. (KM)

Colin Hay @ Old Rock House 8:00 p.m. | $22-$38 Colin Hay is the only reason you know what a Vegemite sandwich is; show some respect ya twerp. Oh yeah, and the former Man at Work has been working solo for over 25 years now, leaving a slew of respectable material in his wake. Ya twerp. (DH)

Big Business @ The Firebird 9:00 p.m. | $13/$16 Remember when that Melvins show at the Firebird sold out and you couldn't get in? Well, two thirds of the members of Big Business are also members of the Melvins, so there's that. More importantly though is that Big Business kicks ass in its own right, with its difficult to categorize noisy rock. (DH)

The Hooten Hallers 45 Release @ Off Broadway w/ Bug Chaser, Doormat & Little Rachel, Jack Grelle & The Johnson Family 9:00 p.m. | $5-$8 Head down to the home base on Lemp to PADOI with the hardest working band that lives in a geodesic dome in the Missouri countryside. This one is just crazy, top to bottom -- let's see what Bug Chaser has in store... (KM)

Twista @ Heartbreakers Rock-n-Roll Saloon 7:00 p.m. | $20 Twista raps fast. What else am I supposed to say here? Like, really, really fast. Heartbreakers is somewhat of an improbable venue to catch the Chicago motor-mouth in action, so that rules too. This is Twista's second stop in St. Louis in the last 2 months; reciprocate the love.
