Every once in awhile you'll have that moment when you're admiring the art collection of a friend or colleague, and think "Is that a -- ? Nah, it can't be..." Check those doubts at the door of the Philip Slein Gallery (4735 McPherson Avenue; 314-361-2617 or www.philipsleingallery.com) because its new exhibition, Other Ways; Other Times: Influences of African-American Tradition from St. Louis Collections, features nothing but original works by notable 20th- and 21st-century African American artists. Kehinde Wiley, Kara Walker, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Dawoud Bey are just some of the big names on display, all of them loaned by local collectors. Other Ways; Other Times opens with a free reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 24. The work remains up through Saturday, November 22, and the gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Starts: Oct. 25. Continues through Nov. 22, 2014
