Benevolent King
(7268 Manchester Road, 314-899-0440)

“Black paint covers the ceiling and three walls, with the fourth mirrored from floor to ceiling. Candlelight dances in the reflection and across the gilded décor. Small bistro tables, surrounded by black-and-white wicker chairs, evoke a Moroccan beachside cafe, while the shiny tiled floor and bar-tops give off a swanky vintage feel… It's the sort of place to take your date if you, how should I say it, want the evening to end on a very high note.” - Cheryl Baehr

Cinder House
(999 North Second Street, 314-881-5759)

“Cinder House is drop-dead gorgeous. Divided into separate restaurant and lounge spaces, it's outfitted in leather and velvet in hues of tan and sapphire blue, turquoise and earth-toned marble and craggy, driftwood-style sculptures. Architectural Digest recently named it the most beautiful bar in Missouri.” - Cheryl Baehr

Westchester
(127 Chesterfield Towne Center, Chesterfield; 636-778-0636)

“Dark and moody, the little light illuminating the dining room comes from thin, brushed brass fixtures on each table shaped so that they cast the lamp's glow downward, as well as swirled-metal chandeliers and a couple of wall sconces. Woodwork is dark — not the espresso of 2000s-era builder basic kitchens but the deep chocolate of 100 percent cacao — including the gorgeous bar that takes up the left side of the shotgun room.” - Cheryl Baehr

“The Bellwether’s dining room is warm and downright sexy, outfitted in luxe velvet, the tapestry-appointed room feels like a Venetian café.” - Cheryl Baehr

Boundary
(7036 Clayton Avenue, 314-932-7818)

Our critic Cheryl Baehr describes Boundary as "more than a bar, not quite a formal restaurant" and “strikingly handsome and sultry — the kind of place you'd find James Bond sipping a martini after a day of fox hunting.”

Bar Moro
(7610 Wydown Boulevard, Clayton; 314-296-3000)

“It's a transportive experience the moment you walk through the front doors from the tree-lined, Tudor-leaning Moorlands neighborhood of Clayton and into the sleek, Iberian eatery. The space is tiny, with roughly 20 table seats and room for about eight more at the bar, making it next to impossible to pass through the room without brushing up against someone you've never before met. The dim lighting allows the fantasy that this is a good thing.” - Cheryl Baehr

Edera Italian Eatery
(48 Maryland Plaza, 314-361-7227)

“The outdoor courtyard remains the most beautiful patio in St. Louis, its brick and stone column walls covered in verdant ivy that gives it the feel of a Roman palace. Beautiful foliage creates a garden feel, with tables spaced out amongst the greenery.” - Cheryl Baehr

Bistro La Floraison
(7637 Wydown Boulevard, Clayton; 314-725-8880)

“Walls are a soft cream with just a hint of rosy undertones. Blush-colored velvet banquettes and burnt sienna drapes create a sumptuous scene, while vintage crystal chandeliers, gilded mirrors and round marble-topped bistro tables evoke 1920s Paris. It's not overtly sultry, but there is a lovely sensuality about the place” - Cheryl Baehr

Commonwealth
(634 North Grand Boulevard, 314-405-3399)

Cheryl Baehr wrote that "The kitchen is so good at cooking that, despite whatever other bells and whistles are on the plate, the technical aspects stand out as the star of the show." But if you can tear your eyes away from the achingly beautiful food that is arriving at your table, you'll also be blown away by the art deco style surrounding you in the restaurant.

Planter’s House
(1000 Mississippi Avenue, PlantersHouseSTL.com)

Cheryl Baehr said of Planter's House: "Exposed brick, swanky red leather seating, gilded chandeliers — it's the epitome of speakeasy chic. Whereas the main bar area has a vintage masculine vibe, the Bullock Room, Planter's House's bar within a bar, is more like a dining salon, complete with ornate wallpaper and gold-rimmed drinkware."

Small Batch Whiskey & Fare
(3001 Locust Street, SmallBatchSTL.com)

“Small Batch occupies midtown's old Ford Motor Building, rehabbed in a style that embraces its vintage roots. The original black-and-white tile floor provided the inspiration for a stunning, retro dining room decked with white marble bistro tables, a black wrought-iron mezzanine and a two-story shiny black wood and mirrored bar. Crystal candleholders and vintage photographs create a Prohibition-era scene.” - Cheryl Baehr

Akar
(7641 Wydown Boulevard, AkarSTL.com)

“The restaurant is outfitted in shades of gray — dark on the trim work, light and textured on the walls. A small, wooden bar sits at the back of the room; to the left of that, a white subway-tiled wall features wooden shelves that display glassware and trinkets. Other than this functional decor, the room is minimally adorned… It's a strikingly intimate setting.” - Cheryl Baehr

Katie’s Pizza and Pasta
(14171 Clayton Road, KatiesPizzaAndPasta.com)

Cheryl Baehr says that this stunningly beautiful space “pulses with energy like an authentic Italian osteria. The dining rooms, divided by an open wooded wall filled with succulents, are light and airy, thoughtfully decorated with hints of copper, wooden tables and mismatched chairs.”

Bridge Tap House and Wine Bar
(1004 Locust Street, TheBridgeSTL.com)

“You enter into the bar, a space that is awesome in the original sense of the word: Light fixtures like oversize birds' nests are suspended from the ceiling. So, too, precariously, or so it seems when a breezes sways them, are racks of wine glasses. The bar itself is a handsome wooden structure, high shelves stocked with beer, wine and liquor bottles.” - Ian Froeb

Louie
(706 De Mun Avenue, Clayton; 314-300-8188)

“At Louie, McGuire has created the sort of restaurant where everyone wants to eat — a factor that makes it an incredibly difficult reservation to score. The small, shotgun dining room, simply appointed with wooden tables, exposed ductwork and a wall of striking, floral-print wallpaper, fills quickly.” - Cheryl Baehr

Bowood
(4605 Olive Street, 314-454-6868)

“It is less a place to go for a bite to eat and more an opportunity to bask in the splendor of nature's bounty. Much of this has to do with its setting; located inside the gorgeous, glass-enclosed Bowood Farms garden center where greenery and flowers abound, the restaurant feels as if it is the culinary gem of the Garden of Eden.” - Cheryl Baehr

The Preston
(212 North Kingshighway Boulevard, 314-633-7800)

“The restaurant looks like a Restoration Hardware showroom. The bold colors of the past have been replaced with muted taupes. Rustic hardwood floors, mismatched framed artwork and antiques, and plaid semi-circle booths decorate the space. The bar, naturally, has been given an Art Deco-inspired green-and-white tiled floor and marble top to go with the black-vested bartenders.” - Cheryl Baehr

(1500 St. Charles Street; BloodAndSandSTL.com)

The bar at Blood and Sand is equal parts modern and cozy. The warm vibes radiate throughout the space, drawing you in and pulling you to the wide selection of spirits on display. But the drinks here are so good that you won’t even care what the bar looks like after sampling a few.
